Saigo Cave さいごうどうくつ
The cave where Takemori Saigo spent his last days and met his end
The Seinan War, which began in February 1877, was a civil war in which the Satsuma Army, led by Saigo Takamori, rose up against government forces. After departing Kagoshima, the Satsuma Army fought across Kyushu, but by August it had disbanded. After that, Saigo and his companions crossed the mountains of Kyushu as they headed for their hometown of Kagoshima. On September 1, the group returned to Kagoshima and barricaded themselves on Shiroyama in the city center. This cave is said to be where Saigo spent his final five days with senior leaders of the private school he founded, until he fell to gunfire.
The cave is an important historic site as the place where Saigo continued to command the Satsuma Army until the very end, and it is now a stop on the Kagoshima City View bus loop that travels around sightseeing spots in the city.
