Did you know that there is a type of bento box meal specifically for the train? It is called "ekiben" and at Kagoshima Chuo Station there are a lot of ekiben filled with premium Kagoshima produce on offer. Here are the most popular five ekiben of all.

Sakurajima Haiboshi Bento

"Haiboshi" is the technique used in Kagoshima of drying fish, pork, chicken and other foods in the volcanic ash of Sakurajima, imparting a rich flavor. With plenty of toppings from the region, this is the most popular ekiben at Kagoshima Chuo Station.

Satsuma Kurozen Bento

This ekiben uses all of the famous "black" (kuro) produce of Kagoshima - Kurobuta pork, black rice, kurozu black vinegar and more. It is a very healthy choice as it is high in fiber and rich in nutrients like polyphenol, while it is low in calories and salt. Also awarded the runner up to the Grand Prix in JR's "Kyushu Ekiben Grand Prix" contest.

Ebimeshi

A long-selling ekiben offering a taste of prawn seasoned rice and satsuma-age fried fishcake, inspired by a traditional sea fishing technique in the waters of northern Kagoshima Prefecture. A popular choice with many runner-up entries in the Kyushu Ekiben Grand Prix contest.

Kurobuta Yokocho

This bento uses 100% Kagoshima Kurobuta pork. Savor the pork three ways: Kurobuta tonkotsu ramen, Kurobuta tonkatsu and chargrilled Kurobuta.

Kagoshima Kuroge Wagyu Yakinuku Bento

A highly popular box in which marinated wagyu beef is heaped on a bed of Kagoshima rice. The beef comes from a specialist Kagoshima Kuroge Wagyu butcher in Kirishima City.
