Savor the charcoal grill style blessings of Kagoshima

First let’s pre-warm your palate with the proper meals at Amu Plaza Kagoshima shopping mall inter-connected with Kagoshima Chūō Station. If you want to dig into Kagoshima’s charcoal grilling culture, try Hazeru. Sit at the bar and you’ll be able to watch live as the chef prepares smokey grilled chicken and other locally-sourced food, all of which go well with a cup or two of a locally distilled spirit, Shōchū. Daiyame and Senbero (¥1,100 ea) are great prix fixe menus offered until 7 pm. Daiymae, in particular, is a term in Kagoshima dialect that refers to the nightly downtime with a drink to take the edge off. Try one yourself to heal from the fatigue of the trip.

Tiffany’s Comment

As a tour guide myself, whenever I visit a place on a job, I earnestly want to introduce and promote their local cuisine. Today, I was struck in awe of how delicious Kagoshima’s cuisine was. The complementarity with shoōchū was also amazing.

Appetite satiated, hop on the Ferris wheel & gaze at twilight glow over the city

Amu Plaza Kagoshima’s iconic attraction is the giant ‘Amuran’ Ferris wheel, boasting a diameter close to 60 meters and a ground height of 91 meters at its zenith. This illuminated spectacle has rightfully earned its place in the heart of the Kagoshima people. Hop aboard one of the glass gondolas for the most spectacular sunset skyline. The looming Sakurajima on the horizon will be on another level.

Barhopping at food stall-themed culinary bazaar a short walk from the station

Kagoshima Yataimura is a great place to nibble and sip the tastes of Kagoshima. Tuna Bar is one of the popular restaurants here and we decided to check them out next. The seafood used in their dishes are brought in from the neighboring fishing towns of Ichiki-Kushikino and Hioki. Wild tuna, local fish, and Jidori chicken dishes are the ones to look for.

Come try the signature dishes Melty Liver and Heart here if you’re in for succulent chicken that are grilled exquisitely. Kiwami Gushi skewer is another house special that you will want to look for, especially its flavorsome original sauce coating made with kurozu black vinegar. If you want to avoid feeling heavy eating skewers, try drinks like the sours that take advantage of locally-produced liqueur, or choose any of your favorites from the extensive options.
