西鄉洞窟 さいごうどうくつ

西鄉隆盛的人生終點之地。在此度過生命的最後時光。

1877年2月爆發的西南戰爭是西鄉隆盛率領的薩摩軍與政府軍之間的一場內戰。薩摩軍從鹿兒島出發，在九州各地征戰，卻於8月宣告解散。隨後，西鄉一行人翻越九州群山，踏上返回故鄉鹿兒島的旅程。9月1日，眾人回到故鄉，盤踞於鹿兒島市中心的城山。據說西鄉隆盛與其創辦的私學校幹部們一起在這座洞窟度過最後五天，直至倒在槍彈之下。
這裡是西鄉隆盛直到最後仍指揮薩摩軍的重要歷史遺址，現為環遊鹿兒島市主要觀光景點的循環巴士「鹿兒島 City View」之停靠站。
