Spring Events

Kinko Bay Park Flower Festival(May)

Roses and many other types of flowers bloom here. You can get free seedlings, and there are also quiz tournaments and gardening courses.

Spring Zoo Festival(mid-March~mid-April)

You can take photos with the koalas, and participate in quizzes and other events.

Haru no Kiichi(15th March ~ 5th May)

A market held on the banks of Kotsuki River, where you can purchase plants, flowers and fruit trees.

Kagoshima Spring Festival(late-April)

A lively Spring event in which people of all ages, from all over the country, gather to dance and soak up the atmosphere.

Summer Events

Kagoshima Cup Yacht Race Around Volcanoes

A yacht race which involves navigating around volcanoes like Sakurajima, Kaimon-dake, and Ioujima in Kinko Bay and the East China Sea. Held every July.

Kinko Bay Summer Night Fireworks

One of the biggest fireworks show on Kyushu, which began during the start of the millennium. Held every August, it is a midsummer night's spectacle against the prime backdrop of Sakurajima and Kinko Bay.

Soga-don no Kasayaki(Umbrella burning)

A traditional event where hundreds of old umbrellas are placed on a riverbed and set alight while singing "Souga Brothers".

Ogionsaa

Includes a parade and dance festival to blow away the summer heat.

Hinoshima Festival

Held on the foot of the magnificent Sakurajima every July, this event is full to the brim with taiko (drum) competitions and fireworks.

Sakurajima Kinko Bay Open Water Swimming Championship

A 4.2km swim in teams of 4 persons across the stretch of water from Sakurajima to Iso Beach. Around 150 teams participate.

Rokugatsu-do (Lantern Festival)

A July festival run in shrines and temples throughout the city, causing them to also become adorned with night stalls. A seasonal tradition to pray for good health and prosperity, it is held on the 15th~16th July at Terukuni Shrine, which sees the largest turnout of people throughout the prefecture.

Sakurajima Artificial Seaside Beach (Rainbow Beach)

Even kids can safely swim within the quiet waves of this dike-enclosed beach.
Open: during summer, 10:00~18:00
Cost: Free

Autumn Events

Ohara Festival (2nd~3rd Nov)

The largest festival in southern-Kyushu, which sees masses dancing the "Ohara-bushi" and "Hanya-bushi" along the main street.

Myoenji-mairi(4th Sunday of October)

This event is held in memory of Yoshihiro Shimadzu, the Lord of Satsuma Province 400 years ago, who led his forces to a successful charge and retreat in the Sekigahara battle. It includes a pilgrimage where participants walk from Kagoshima City to Tokushige Shrine in Hioki City.

Taniyama Furusato Festival(late October)

The biggest festival in the Taniyama area.

Aki no Kiichi (15th Oct ~ 15th Nov)

A market held on the banks of Kotsuki River, where you can purchase plants, flowers and fruit trees.

Chrysanthemum Festival (Nov)

A chrysanthemum contest and many types of chrysanthemum are exhibited.

Winter Events

Hamanage Tournament (Coming-of-Age Day in Jan)

Teams of 4-5 people battle it out with a puck made from a slice of a 6cm-diameter oak tree.

Jubilo Iwata and Shimizu S-Pulse Spring Camps (early-Feb~mid-Feb)

Pro soccer teams Jubilo Iwata and Shimizu S-Pulse hold their spring camps.

Running Sakurajima(Feb)

People of all ages can participate in this refreshing marathon on Sakurajima's lava rock running course.
